The Consulate General of India, New York, in association with the Indo-American Festival Inc, a not for profit organization based in New Jersey, organized a get together event at the Consulate on Sept. 10, 2009 to mark the beginning of Dassera Festival season. About 140 guests, including sponsors, media and other invited dignitaries attended the event.
The function began with the lighting of the lamp by representatives of various religions present on the occasion.
Consul General of India in New York, Ambassador Prabhu Dayal emphasized that the Indian Consulate paid particular attention to celebrations of various religious functions to uphold the secular tradition of India. He further added that this Consulate belonged to all Indians and their well-wishers, and hence Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Hanukkah and Baisakhi had been celebrated here during the last year.
A short cultural program was organized in which an episode of Ram Leela depicting the death of Ravana was presented.
The event concluded with a dinner reception.
